Alumina can be extracted from bauxite through the Bayer process and produced into several grades including activated, smelter-grade and calcined grades.

Характеристики

This section describes physical and chemical properties of a substance or mixture, such as its appearance (physical state, color), smell, explosive limits (upper and lower explosive limits), vapor pressure/opacity levels, melting point/freezing point temperatures, solubility levels, pH values, relative density values and flash and autoignition points. Furthermore, toxicity information must also be provided, with details on elements known to be toxic if released into the environment.

Alumina boasts many desirable characteristics, including low electric conductivity, resistance to chemical attack and extreme hardness (9 on the Mohs scale). As such, its use has found widespread application ranging from industrial cutting tools, ceramic insulators for spark plugs and electrical transformers as well as coating interior sodium-vapor streetlamps.

UL SDS templates require that this section contain recommendations for proper disposal practices, which could include listing approved disposal containers, advice on transport securing them during transport, or instructions to prevent contaminated material entering the environment. These may also contain language discouraging sewage disposal and noting that alumina as supplied does not constitute hazardous waste under transportation regulations. If the alumina has become contaminated with other processing chemicals, these contaminants must be managed according to applicable transport regulations. If applicable regulations provide this information, this section of UL SDSs must indicate where this information can be found; additionally it should provide dates of preparation or revision as well as where they were prepared or revised last. For the safety and welfare of employees in the workplace it is imperative that SDSs remain readily accessible, with one or more individuals designated to maintain them.

Приложения

Alumina is extracted from bauxite, an ore that naturally contains variable concentrations of water-containing aluminum oxides, for use in the smelting of aluminum metal and in advanced ceramics and chemical processing applications. Alumina also occurs naturally as gemstones such as corundum and ruby; their colors being determined by impurities that give these rocks their unique hues.

Activated alumina can be used as both a catalyst substrate and as an adsorbent to remove water from gases and liquids. Smelter-grade alumina, accounting for approximately 90 percent of total production, is transported directly to aluminum plants where it is electrolyzed into aluminum metal. Calcined alumina is utilized in many ceramic products including spark plug insulators and integrated circuit packages, bone implants, laboratory ware, sandpaper grits and grinding wheels, as well as refractory linings for industrial furnaces.

Alumina is an integral component of technical ceramics, materials that combine both physical and chemical properties. Aside from its high strength and corrosion resistance, alumina also has the capacity to withstand operating at very high temperatures – making it suitable for use as protective tubes for pumps and gas containers in high-pressure sodium-vapor streetlamps.

Safety

Under transport regulations, this product does not fall under hazardous or dangerous categories. Used material contaminated with process materials may present different hazards/properties that should be dealt with accordingly.

Hazards associated with Inhalation, Ingestion and Skin Contact: In the event of dust inhalation, immediately rinse eyes with plenty of water before seeking medical assistance for ingestion. Should skin contact occur, remove clothing that has become contaminated and wash thoroughly using soap and water, while for fires use appropriate extinguishing media to extinguish them.

This SDS was prepared by the supplier utilizing the UL SDS template.
